Canterbury NH - Shaker Village

Our American History books tell us that people came to the "New World" in pursuit of religious freedom. The Shaker community, an offshoot of the Quaker faith, was part of that movement. This particular village was established in 1792 and the last living resident of this village died in 1992. There are other communities in New York and Kentucky.

Why have they been disappearing? One theory is that part of their religious beliefs was required celibacy. They relied on converts to keep the community going. The United States has become more secular, no converts. Just history now. They were wise enough to establish a foundation to share the knowledge of their culture.

Headed to Bristol, Connecticut tomorrow. Then at least one day trip to "The City."
