The White Mountains of New Hampshire

What a difference a day makes. We arrived in New Hampshire yesterday under rain soaked skies. We woke up this morning to sunshine. Today's temperature was a little cool, so we decided to drive north, into the famous White Mountains of New Hampshire in search of Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Appalachian Chain. Quite a winding trail, so we satisfied ourselves with reaching the Trail Head for the Appalachian Trail, along with many, many other people - must have been those Weekend Leaf Peepers we heard locals talking about. Amazing. Traffic stopped on I-93 North for miles. Amazing. And the exit at Woodstock and Lincoln was backed up for miles, wondered what they knew that we didn't, but we weren't willing to get in line to find out :)

We got to see lots of color today. Each day gets a little better. As we approached Mount Lafayette (5,249 feet), we got out of the car at a scenic overlook (not along the Interstate like so many others - see the photos below) for a picture. The temperature had dropped to 43 degrees. Patti says, "I look cold in that picture." Because, she was.

As we returned to Concord, Dale noticed Loudon Road and a sign pointing to New Hampshire Motor Speedway. A NASCAR event is held here each year. Stopped by for a photo. We plan to stay at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in about ten days or so. After returning to Concord, we visited the Capitol area of the City for lunch. A beautiful Capitol building. And, a very interesting sky; clouds that reminded us of Georgia O'Keefe.
